About the prize

The Footscray Art Prize is a biennial non-acquisitive visual art prize for contemporary artworks across multiple platforms and disciplines.

It is open for entries nationally and does not have a theme.

Established in 2016, it contributes to Footscray's reputation as a thriving cultural hub that supports and fosters the arts, and provides an opportunity to celebrate this artistic vibrancy and creativity.

Categories

The Footscray Art Prize is comprised of four categories. 

footscray art prize (main)

$10,000

  • Open to Australian residents

  • Maximum of two (2) entries per entrant is permitted

    • Note: Either two entries in this category OR one in this category and one in another, ensuring that you enter two different artworks

  • A non-refundable entry fee payment of $30 (including GST) is applicable for each artwork entered

  • The exhibition of shortlisted works will be held at Footscray Community Arts Centre.

Street art prize

The dedicated Footscray Art Prize street art site for 2019

  • Open to Australian residents

  • Maximum of two (2) entries per entrant is permitted

    • Note: Either two entries in this category OR one in this category and one in another, ensuring that you enter two different artworks

  • A non-refundable entry fee payment of $30 (including GST) is applicable for each artwork entered

  • Based on design concepts, three (3) artists will be shortlisted and displayed digitally in the Footscray Art Prize exhibition at the Footscray Community Arts Centre

  • Limited to 2D, wall-based artworks only

  • The winner of the Street Art Prize will be commissioned and receive $5,000 (in addition to the Prize) to prepare the site and install their artwork on 174 Nicholson Street, Footscray (wall facing Irving Street). This fee includes artist materials excluding anti-graffiti coating, scissor lift and traffic management.

$1,500

  • Open to Australian University and Art College students enrolled at the time of entering the Prize

  • Maximum of two (2) entries per entrant is permitted

    • Note: Either two entries in this category OR one in this category and one in another, ensuring that you enter two different artworks

  • A non-refundable entry fee payment of $20 (including GST) is applicable for each artwork entered

  • The exhibition of shortlisted works will be held at VU at MetroWest.

young artists prize

secondary $500

  • Open to young people in Melbourne's west who are residents or attend school in the following LGA's:

    • City of Maribyrnong

    • City of Hobsons Bay

    • City of Wyndham

    • City of Brimbank

    • City of Moonee Valley

    • City of Melton

  • Maximum of one (1) entry per entrant is permitted

  • Entry is free

  • The exhibition will be held at VU at MetroWest.
